5 Days ACE funded space R&D in Lyme Regis

This is too exciting not to post anywhere and everywhere:

R&D by the Sea is the Marine Theatre’s nurturing programme for new and developing work.

We all need space to think.  Lyme Regis, set in the heart of England’s first natural UNESCO World Heritage Site, surrounded by 95 miles of truly stunning coastline with rocks recording 185 million years of the Earth’s history, has just that. Whether you’re an established or emerging artist, you have an inkling of an idea or a fully formed play, at the Marine Theatre we have the space to let you think.

It’s not often ideas come fully formed. We need time to delight, surprise, scare and confuse ourselves. To give ourselves fertile ground on which to develop. To invest in hours of research and then to forget all about it.

Supported by the National Lottery through Arts Council England, we want writers, actors, theatre makers and practitioners of all kinds to come to Lyme Regis. Unfold, unlock and explore a vision, a feeling, a thought. Draw from our landscapes, history, communities and people.

How does it work?

We’ll give you use of the theatre and its facilities for free, normally for a 5 day period, normally from Monday-Friday, to develop your work. We’ll provide you with budget for technical support. You’ll have the opportunity to document your progress before, during and after your visit on our website via the R&D by the Sea blog. At the end of your week with us we’ll market, promote and host a sharing and provide you with an audience. And we’ll arrange and pay for your travel and accommodation too.

What happens afterwards?

We want your week at the theatre to be the start of your relationship with Lyme Regis. When your idea becomes a play, we’d like to talk to you about how you acknowledge our support on your promotional material. Of course we’d like to talk to you about putting it on at the Marine Theatre too. We work very closely with the Dorset Theatre Promoters Consortium and together with Dorset Loves Arts can also recommend you to venues across our region, giving you a springboard for further touring.

When do I apply?

R&D by the Sea 2015/16 is now open for applications via the form on our website, which can be found here. The application portal will be open from June 1st to September 30th 2015. During that period we will select 12 artists and assign them an R&D slot between September 2015 and August 2016. Places on the programme will be awarded to around 12 artists in all. After September 30th 2015 the application portal will close and we will accept no more R&D applications until further notice. To be kept in touch with future plans for R&D by the Sea you can be added to our mailing list here.
