How Not To Write A Crap Radio Drama

As we can’t get together for writing sessions and theatres are dark, I’m offering a Writing for Radio Course via email. What could possibly go wrong.

An Introduction to Writing Drama for Radio

Start date:   Wednesday 13 May for 6 weeks.

You will receive a weekly email on Monday mornings with:

A topic of the week and a short writing challenge (2 pages)

Plus an extract of a radio play to read and/or listening suggestions.

The Course will cover:

  • Script Format
  • Soundscapes
  • Time and Place
  • Creating Characters
  • Monologues
  • Dialogue and Story
  • Beginnings and Endings
  • Revising and editing
  • Submission opportunities

Send me your 2 pages of writing each week for feedback.

By the end of the course you are aiming to complete a 10 minute radio play.

Special intro cost is £48 for 6 weeks payable by BACS.

I’ll keep the group small to ensure everyone receives feedback.

How do you introduce characters?   Why is exposition a problem?

What are the BBC looking for?

Weekend Writers’ Getaway in Wiltshire

I’ve been searching for a place to hold a Residential Writers’ Weekend and a few weeks ago I Cholderton Stonehenge Youth Hostelwas lucky enough to find this great venue owned by a writer in Cholderton which they tell me is only 4 miles from Stonehenge.  It’s taken a while to work out the Nitty Gritty but without further ado, here it is:

Weekend Writers’ Getaway  16-18 October  Cholderton

Does your writing need pzazz and pzing?

This weekend is ideal for kickstarting new dramas and kickboxing writers’ blocks. Here you can get away for some dedicated writing time in a peaceful environment where Roman, Iron and Bronze Age settlements lurk just below the surface.

Quote: ‘NowYoung Stallion at Cholderton Rare Breeds Farm that my creativity and confidence has been freed again I am moving on towards my goal of a 90 minute play with renewed energy and clarity.’

Seven Minutes of Fame

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

What a week. David’s success with Dialogue on Wednesday, then Thursday night we put together a showcase of 7 writers’ work in 7 minutes – undying thanks to actors Jon Nash, Kerry Stockwell, Joe Bossano and the Jon Nash who directed – all did a great job in spite of my manic blah de blahs.

The Seven Writers: Alison Barclay, Anthony Fairweather, Gina Gough, Linda Morse, Jeff Page, David Watson, John Yates

My role in this was to try and represent the work of Scriptwriters’ Doo Dah writers in the space of a 7 minute performance.  No problem.  I love cutting, cutting, cutting and more cutting.  Note to Self: you know when you’ve spent 3 days cutting 200 pages down to 6 and you think you’ve finished?  You haven’t.
